After India won the ODI series 2–1 against South Africa, Gautam Gambhir hit back at critics in the press conference. He said many comments were made because the Test results didn’t go India’s way, but no journalist mentioned that India played the first Test without their captain Shubman Gill, who couldn’t bat in either innings due to a neck injury.
Gambhir also indirectly targeted Delhi Capitals’ owner Parth Jindal, saying that some people made statements despite having no link to cricket. He added that even an IPL team owner commented on split coaching, which was surprising. Gambhir said everyone should stay within their limits—just as the team doesn’t interfere in others’ roles, others shouldn’t comment on theirs.
After India’s home Test series loss to South Africa-
Delhi Capitals owner Parth Jindal had demanded separate coaches for red-ball and white-ball formats. On X, he wrote that he had never seen India’s Test team look so weak at home, and said this happens when red-ball specialists are not selected. He argued that the team failed to show the depth it actually has in Test cricket and that the BCCI should appoint a specialist red-ball coach.
Gambhir said the Test team is going through a transition and pointed out that Shubman Gill’s absence was a major factor in the defeat. He added that when a team is in transition and the captain—also the key batter—is unavailable, results are naturally affected, but no one discussed this. He called the debate around pitches and other issues unnecessary.
